Great Moments in Romanian History is a collection of articles written and published by Marius Dorin Lulea, in which he analyses and, at times, comments upon significant historical events that have shaped the Romanian nation or are closely connected to its historical development.

The book reflects upon major milestones in Romania’s national journey, with particular attention to the struggle of Romanians for self-determination, independence, freedom, and national unity. The author argues that, during the decades following the fall of the communist regime, there has been a growing tendency to diminish the importance of Romanian history and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of nationhood and statehood.

The articles are united by a central theme: the Romanian national project — the aspiration for a single Romanian state encompassing all territories historically inhabited by a Romanian majority. According to the author, this national project was articulated during the Revolution of 1848, advanced through the Union of the Romanian Principalities in 1859 under Alexandru Ioan Cuza, and ultimately fulfilled on 1 December 1918, when the Romanian-majority provinces chose to unite, freely and unconditionally, with the Kingdom of Romania.

The book also reflects on the challenges and pressures that have accompanied the development of the Romanian state throughout its history. While various external forces have, at different times, sought influence over Romanian territories, the author emphasises that contemporary Romania stands as a consolidated state, with clearly defined institutions and a strong national identity rooted in its historical continuity.

Through a series of accessible and reflective essays, Great Moments in Romanian History invites readers to revisit some of the defining episodes of Romania’s past and to better understand the historica
